A Case Report of non-Hodgkin¢¥s Lymphoma in Appendix

Abstract
Up to 40 % of lymphoma arise in extranodal location, the gastrointestinal tract is the most common site for primary extranodal lymphoma. The gastrointestinal tract also may be secondarily involved by systemic dissemination of non-Hodgkin¢¥s lymphoma. The primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin¢¥s lymphoma may arise anywhere in the gut, in order of stomach (55 to 60 %), small intestine (25 to 30 %), proximal colon (10 to 15 %) and distal colon (up to 10 %). The appendix is only rarely involved. The gastrointestinal lymphoma appear to arise from the B cells of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue.
We report a rare case of non-Hodgkin¢¥s lymphoma arising appendix in a 63 year-old male. Appendix was enlarged as 10 ¡¿ 3 §¯ and obstructed by grayish solid mass at distal portion. Also proximal portion showed severe necrosis Microscopically, tumor showed diffuse proliferation of large cells with vesicular nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and relatively abundant `cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were reactive for LCA, L26, and MB1. Thus we diagnosed this case as non-Hodgkin¢¥s lymphoma, diffuse large- cell type of B cell lineage by Working Formulation.
